Sage smudging is an ancient art and ritual widely practiced by Native Americans to rid a space of negative energy. The process involves burning sage and fanning a feather toward the spaces in your home that have energy debris, which is a buildup of negative energy caused by arguments, a loss in family, divorce and anything that causes stress and keeps the energy stagnant in one’s space.
Sage smoke is a purifier of the air, both metaphysically and physically, by creating negative ions. Negative ions can reduce stress. A widely circulated article published May 6, 2002 on WebMD states, “Negative ions are odorless, tasteless and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain environments. Think mountains, waterfalls and beaches. Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress and boost our daytime energy.”
For those who practice sage smudging for the metaphysical, it has been said to be the gateway to the spiritual realm and acts as a portal, which is why it is continually used in ceremonies. Native North Americans used it in ceremony, as well as for objects and for their bodies. The process of burning herbs or bushes is a common practice found in many cultures across the globe. Frankincense is used in Middle Eastern countries and in churches to clear out negative space. Strong incense is popularly used in India and throughout China to clear space for ceremonies. The purification of space through this modality is a global phenomenon that may highly benefit people spiritually and physically.
